It’s up to us to ensure every citizen in Dutchess, Orange and Ulster counties has the information and ability to cast their vote. Here are some ways we, as a League, can empower voters and defend democracy through our advocacy and volunteer work.
Register Voters: As you know, to make their voices heard citizens must register to vote, but voter registration opportunities are not created equally. Overly complicated or challenging processes are one of the most common forms of voter suppression, and they disproportionately impact communities of color.
By volunteering to register voters, you can be the difference in whether someone is able to cast their ballot. Last year we hosted countless registration events throughout the three counties, and will do the same this year. Watch this newsletter for announcements about these events. Also visit Volunteer Opportunities where you can sign up to volunteer.
Spread the Word:Door-to door canvassing is considered the best way to Get Out the Vote (GOTV).If GOTV isn’t for you, phone banks, text bands, direct mail and literature drops are all effective ways to get out the vote. Search for opportunities in your communities. You should be able to find them with certain candidates for your political party and with nonpartisan organizations.
Advocate for Voting Rights Legislation: With proposed anti-voter legislation at historic highs, we must work to ensure that voting is fair, transparent and accessible. Another way to do so is by promoting pro-voter bills and efforts. It’s important to keep informed of local, state and federal voting rights legislation.
Get Your Friends to Follow the Leader: Ifit feels safe, organize a carpool to the polls on your next election day, which you can find at VOTE411.It’s an easy way to get your friends and family to vote.
Can’t carpool? Forming a voting plan with friends and family makes them more likely to vote. A voting plan might include asking:
- Do you have a mail-in ballot or absentee ballot, or are you going to the polls?
- What time will you be voting and where?
- How are you getting to the polls?
- Do you need to take off work or secure childcare?
- Did you verify your registration?
Support Voting Rights Organizations: In addition to the League, you can defend democracy by supporting voting rights organizations like Black Voters Matter, Native American Voting Rights, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, Voto Latino, or any others. You can give individually to the organization, start a fundraiser with friends and family, ask for donations as a birthday gift. And remember, don’t worry if you can only give a small amount – many small donations can have a large impact.
