Whether you are a newly registered voter, a new resident of Dutchess or Ulster counties, or a new citizen, the information on these pages will help you prepare to vote. All New Yorkers must register to vote by specific deadlines to be eligible to vote in Primary and General Elections. There are also deadlines for making changes to your registration, such as changes to address or party enrollment.
THESE ARE THE GENERAL ELECTION DEADLINES FOR 2026
If you need to register to vote or change your existing registration:
Submit the application online OR complete the paper form and ensure it is returned to your County Board of Elections by October 24, 2026
If you want to REQUEST an Early Mail or Absentee Ballot:
Submit an application online OR complete the paper form and ensure it is returned to your County Board of Elections by October 24, 2026. You may also complete the application in person at your county Board of Elections office by November 2, 2026.
If you need to RETURN your Early Mail or Absentee Ballot:
Ballots may be mailed or returned in person by November 3, 2026. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by November 3, 2026 and received by November 10,2026.
